Winter has its own special charm. The crisp, cold air, the long nights and, if you’re lucky, blankets of snow. While summer is a popular time to enjoy the great outdoors, there are plenty of outdoor activities that are well suited to colder months.

Kite flying

Flying a kite is a staple of a summer beach day but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a go during colder months. In fact, it’s often easier to fly a kite in winter.

The season’s coastal winds are ideal for keeping your kite airborne. If you’ve never flown before, it’s a great time to start as the constant currents will have you soaring through the skies.

Winter winds can be biting though, so make sure you’re wrapped up warm and not tempted to end your flying fun prematurely. If you’re wearing gloves make sure they have good grip too, to limit the chances of your kite flying right out of your hands.

Norfolk is home to some of the best beaches in the country, making it one of the perfect destinations to fly a kite. If you need somewhere to stay, Dunston Hall Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort, Norfolk is less than a 40-minute drive from the coast at Great Yarmouth.

Stargazing

Winter is one of the best times for stargazing. While summer skies are often clear, winter is truly the way to go when it comes to observing the stars. The cold air means there is less moisture in the atmosphere, which might not be obvious to the naked eye during the daytime but makes all the difference at night.

‘Star hop’ from one constellation to the next, starting with the three bright stars of Orion in the east, before moving on to Gemini, Taurus, and others.

If you want to try your hand at stargazing this winter, stay with us at the Stratford Manor Hotel, Warwickshire. The hotel just a half-hour drive from the Rollright Stones, one of the best places to observe the stars in Southwest England.

Wild swimming

Wild swimming may seem like a summer pursuit but that shouldn’t put you off from a winter dip.

Swimming in cold water has plenty of health benefits and you’ll feel invincible after, just make sure you’re prepared for the plunge by wearing the right swimwear.

Beginners might want to try a designated site like Chasewater Lake. The body of water at Walsall  is open all year round with a shallow area for beginners to build up their confidence. There’s even the option for one-on-one coaching.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay, The Telford Hotel, Spa & Golf Resort, Shropshire, is less than an hour’s drive away, with a sauna and steam room to help dry off too.
