Mastering the Bump-and-Run – The Best Shot for Winter Golf
Why the Bump-and-Run is the Perfect Winter Shot
When playing golf in winter, soft and wet fairways make it difficult to generate spin and stop the ball quickly on the green. The bump-and-run chip shot is one of the most effective shots you can add to your arsenal during colder months. It allows you to keep the ball low, avoid unpredictable lies, and maximize control.
What is a Bump-and-Run?
A bump-and-run is a low-trajectory shot that gets the ball rolling quickly along the ground after landing, rather than spinning and stopping sharply like a high-lofted wedge shot. This is ideal for winter conditions, where wet fairways and soft greens can make high-spinning shots unreliable.
How to Execute the Bump-and-Run:
1. Choose the right club – typically, a 6-iron, 7-iron or 8-iron works best for a bump-and-run as they provide enough loft to clear obstacles but keep the ball rolling.
2. Position the ball back in your stance – placing the ball slightly behind centre helps create a descending strike and a lower launch angle.
3. Use a shorter, controlled swing – unlike a full wedge shot, the bump-and-run requires a smooth, compact stroke with minimal wrist action.
4. Focus on landing spot, not the pin – identify a landing area just onto the green where the ball will take its first bounce before rolling toward the hole.
5. Keep your hands ahead of the ball – a forward shaft lean at impact ensures clean contact and prevents scooping the shot.
When to Use the Bump-and-Run:
• When faced with a tight lie on firm or frosty fairways.
• When playing into the wind, as keeping the ball low minimizes wind interference.
• When approaching a green with plenty of open space to let the ball roll.
Mastering the bump-and-run shot will help you navigate winter course conditions with confidence and precision.
