How to celebrate Jane Austen’s 250th birthday
The queen of romance, Jane Austen, would have been 250 this year, and literature lovers are invited to celebrate the occasion in her home county of Hampshire, where there’ll be a series of events taking place across the coming months
Despite only having published six novels, two of which were posthumous, Austen has been a huge influence for decades. So, whether you’re a fan of Mr Darcy or emphasise with Emma, come and see how embrace all things Regency romance in 2025.
No. 8 College Street, Winchester
Between June and August, No. 8 College Street, where Austen spent her final days, will be open to the public for the first time ever. Displays and artefacts will give the public an insight into Austen’s last days and her connections to Winchester.
The house is also holding a Regency Embroidery Workshop where you can create your own Regency inspired design. You’ll learn from experienced embroiderers and use traditional methods to create your piece. You’ll also be able to take your creation home at the end of the workshop.
Next door to No. 8, Winchester College is staging an outdoor performance of Pride and Prejudice. Austen’s most well-known story will be performed in the Warden’s Garden, a tranquil setting inspired by Regency gardens, on 23 July.

Winchester Cathedral
Jane Austen is buried in Winchester Cathedral, a site which is open to the public all year round. Visitors are encouraged to leave flowers, and letters next to the brass memorial plaque.
The Cathedral is also playing host to a Regency Ball on Saturday 31 May. While it’s not mandatory, guests are encouraged to don their best Regency wear to dance the night away. There’ll be a performance by the Hampshire Regency Dancers, and you’ll be serenaded all night by the Warleggan Village Band.
The Cathedral is hosting several other Austen-related events throughout the year, including academic talks, original manuscript viewings, and a memorial service. Visit the Winchester Cathedral website to book tickets for one of these events. Please note, some events may not be open for booking until closer to the time.

The Great Hall, Winchester
Deep dive into Regency era dress with the Regency Fashion Show at the Great Hall. There’ll be demonstrations of the many layers of clothes worn by people in the Regency era, a runway of models wearing Regency garments, and the chance to see Jane Austen’s real overcoat. You’ll also hear talks from experts on all things Regency fashion.
The Great Hall is also hosting a Regency Ball on 16 August. Again, dressing up isn’t mandatory, but ticket holders will get a 15% discount at Hampshire Wardrobe, a reputable costume shop full of Regency wear. What better excuse to embrace an empire silhouette and bonnets?

The Arc
Beyond the Bonnets is an exhibition focused on the untold stories of working women in the Regency era. Told through passages of Austen’s work and her personal letters, historic objects, and an immersive soundscape you’ll get to know the stories of working Regency women, including Susannah Sackree, the nursemaid of Austen’s brother’s family, and Mrs Mary Martin, a woman who ran her own inn and organised public balls.
