When you’re getting ready for your trip to Crewe Hall, don’t forget to pack your sense of occasion. You’ll need it as soon as you come through the gates and cruise along the drive lined with hornbeam trees, standing to attention. Rising up from behind these giant sentries is the hall itself; a breath-taking Jacobean manor house. Or is it a highly contemporary, state-of-the-art extravagance? Somehow the two blend into one.

The site of the main hall dates back to the Normans, and we still get the odd Norman staying now. Originally built between 1616 and 1636 by Ranulph Crewe, this grade I listed building was largely rebuilt in 1866 after a fire to a design by architect Edward Barry, also known for Covent Garden Theatre and Charing Cross station. With its exquisite marble fireplaces, ornate plasterwork, carved wood and stained glass windows, the elaborate décor and architecture make quite an impression and a glorious backdrop to many a wedding and celebration.

We take huge pride in every original feature, from the claw feet on the baths to the hand-painted wallpaper displaying the Crewe crest in the Ranulph Restaurant. As well as each of the little quirks that make this fascinating building and its surroundings worthy of being a QHotel, such as the Bell Tower, the underground maze of tunnels and the squirrel that pops in for afternoon tea. We’ve even added a few quirks of our own for good measure, such as the 360° revolving bar and the football pitch.

But then, we do have a lot to live up to, as Crewe Hall has been attracting guests of taste and distinction for many a year, including King George V and Queen Mary in 1913 and Queen Elizabeth II in 1955. Its notable guests include celebrities and politicians, so make sure you polish your shoulders; you never know who you may be rubbing against.

When you’ve finished drinking in the delicious surroundings, test our barman’s cocktail knowledge at the bar, then head for either the Ranulph Restaurant in the main hall or the Brasserie to peruse our AA rosette-winning menus. We’ve made sure they’re fit for a king. Just in case.
